December 2024 was a rather anticyclonic affair, and zonal in nature. There were some cyclonic interruptions though, notably on the 6th and 7th with Storm Darragh, but after that pressure rose quickly with an intense high forming close to northern Scotland from the 9th to the 13th. A couple of other deep depressions tracked eastward close to the north of Scotland on the 18th and 22nd, producing gales and storm force gusts, but the UKMOUKMOThe Meteorological Office is the United Kingdom's national weather service. I produced this data from six hourly reanalysis data rather than just the daily data from the CRU at the UEA, I wonder if anyone will even notice?
A bridge between two large positive temperature anomalies, one in the west of in Hudson Bay (+11°C), the other in the east in the Kara Sea (+7°C), spanned the North Atlantic in December. Wet across central southern England, parts of the Midlands and northwest England, but less wet further north, particularly Northern Ireland, where totals were below average.
Rather dull, with below average sunshine in much of the west, but brighter further east, with above average sunshine totals across East Anglia and the far east.

Rainfall totals were closer to average though, at 110% of the POAPOAPercentage Of Average, the wetter weather in the north balancing out the drier weather across the south. A month of two distinct parts, that were not truly represented well in either the anomaly maps or climate graphs. The first 16 days of the month were dry and mild. In the south they were particularly overcast and gloomy. The second half was colder, with frost and snow in places, with three named storms, storm Bert bringing snow, heavy rain and flooding to some places. These two halves effectively cancelled each other out.
November 2024 ended up with a mean temperature very close to the average of 7.2°C in central England, and just 0.1°C lower than the 1991-2020 LTALTALong Term Average. This is usually defined as a 30 year period by the WMO.. Curiously, the linear trend from 1878 shows a rise of +0.11° per decade in the last 136 years, whilst the most recent 30 year trend from 1995 shows that November temperatures seem to have plateaued.

The global temperature estimates made by the ECMWFECMWFThe European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by most of the nations of Europe. I’m quite glad about that, because my DIYDIYDo It Yourself reanalysis series which I maintain showed the same thing. What is more astounding about October’s temperatures though, is that a 30 year linear trend on the ERA5 data shows a whopping 0.313°C decadal rise in global temperatures. If this were typical for all months of the year you can forget about limiting the increase in warming to only 1.5°C, it would be more like 3°C.😮
A quick look at the objective LWTLWTLamb Weather Types are often used in UK-based analyses, with individual weather patterns based on the eight primary cardinal directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) plus cyclonic (C), anticyclonic (A) and unclassified (U) types. data from 1871 to find the most anticyclonic November reveals that 1942 and 1988 (60%) are at the top of the pile. Not a lot of people know that. 🙂
November 1988November 1942
As you might expect, November 1942 and 1978 were both quite dry and cold months.
I have no idea if this is an analog for the coming winter, but I’ll do a bit more digging and see what I can find out what the following winters were like.
A month of mixed weather types, a negatively zonal start gradually became more zonal, with alternating cyclonic and anticyclonic spells through the month, which gradually became more anticyclonic in nature as pressure gradually rose.
The cold theme continued across southern Greenland & Iceland during October. It was particularly warm across Arctic Canada and to the north of Franz Józef Land in the Arctic ocean (+12°C), central parts of the United States where also much warmer than average (+5°C). Europe was generally 1-3 degrees above average. Spot my deliberate mistake in anomalies across Africa, if I had more than 14 subscribers I would bother to fix it. 😜
Globally, October 2024 was the second warmest in my DIYDIYDo It Yourself reanalysis series that extend back to 1948, fractionally behind 2023.
The daily mean global temperature has just overtaken those in October last year once again, setting more new daily records. Even without an El NinoEl NiñoEl Niño 'The Boy' is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and is associated with a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, the globe still continues to steadily warm. ☹
There is only one chart in the whole month that doesn’t include a front of some kind in it. Spot the days when Mr Occlusion was on shift down at Exeter, the 9th is total nonsense.
One day I’ll get around to adding some temperature and rainfall anomalies to these climate statistics, until then all I can say is October 2024 was a fairly average month for our part of Ross-shire.
The mean temperature for October 2024 in central England was 11.5°C, making it +0.7°C warmer than the 1991-2020 LTALTALong Term Average. This is usually defined as a 30 year period by the WMO.. The month was marked by a short cold spell from the 10th to the 14th, after that temperatures were generally several degrees above the LTA.
Surprisingly, October ended up a rather average kind of month as far as sunshine, precipitation and temperature were concerned for the UKUKThe United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a country in Europe, off the north-western coast of the continental mainland. It comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. as whole. Regionally, the northwest was drier than average, and the northeast sunnier than average. Mean temperature anomalies across the nation, which were slightly above the LTALTALong Term Average. This is usually defined as a 30 year period by the WMO., were within 0.3°C of each other. As Greavies would remark, it’s a funny old game Saint😜
I’ve just refactored the main window in my Vantage Pro database application, and added a three-line footer to provide means and extremes for whatever month or season the data has been filtered on.
