Who says nature abhors a straight line?

1 Jan 2025 1230 UTCUTC Coordinated Universal Time or UTC is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is within about 1 second of mean solar time (such as UT1) at 0° longitude (at the IERS Reference Meridian as the currently used prime meridian) and is not adjusted for daylight saving time. It is effectively a successor to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

A well defined, and remarkably straight, squall line across the southeast of England.

Who says nature abhors a straight line?

Well it was William Kent as a matter of fact.

New Windy feature

Forgive me if you already have seen this, but I’ve just noticed a rather clever new feature on Windy.com concerning weather radar. You can now extrapolate forward the latest weather radar imagery by up to an hour to see just how quickly rain or snow from a shower or frontal system is moving, and when it will reach you. Perhaps they must use the 850 hPahPa A Hectopascal is the SI unit of pressure and identical to the Millibar wind speeds and direction to steer the pixels. The Met OfficeUKMO The Meteorological Office is the United Kingdom's national weather service. I’ve also noticed that you can now overlay isobars and show SFERICs which is also very useful.
I’ve been involved with developing new and innovative ways to visualise weather information ation for nearly 30 years now, and I’ve never seen anything as obvious and useful as this functionality. I’ve always been a fan of Windy.com, and one day I’ll pluck up the courage to subscribe, the only thing that prevents this is that I’m a tight fisted Yorkshire man.
Use the slider in the above image to see what I mean or try it out live at Windy.com.

Evidence of rainfall bunching?

Above is a map of accumulated rainfall on the 21 February from 0000 to 0900 UTCUTC Coordinated Universal Time or UTC is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. Here’s the link to the paper “Rainfall enhancement downwind of hills due to standing waves on the melting-level and the extreme rainfall of December 2015 in the Lake District of northwest England” (link).

Misleading weather radar

Not a day to be putting too much trust in what the weather radar is telling you. Most, if not all of the precipitation across the northwest of Scotland is obviously falling from medium level altostratus and not reaching the ground. We really do need better radar coverage across the north of Scotland which will certainly help with radar over shooting and picking up medium level rainfall across the northwest Highlands.

A distant CB

Dear Diary
I spotted a distant CBCB Cumulonimbus cloud. Well-developed cumulonimbus clouds are characterized by a flat, anvil-like top looking northeast down the Strath this morning. I reckon it must have been was some way off the coast of Caithness gauging by the weather radar and the satellite imagery.

That distant CB survived and grew a little during the day as it drifted very slowly south and was still here just before sunset lit up by the setting sun at 1520 UTCUTC Coordinated Universal Time or UTC is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. Bridge of Dee

I make the wettest place in Aberdeenshire, using estimates from weather radar, the bridge of Dee with 143.6 mm of rain since the start of Wednesday (16 November) till now. That’s the wettest residential site but there are some deep purple pixles and a couple of white ones indication totals above 225 mm. Here’s a league table of wettest residential places, and as you can see there are other sites outwith Aberdeenshire.
